David Richards has been Assistant Director of the Margaret Chase Smith Library in Skowhegan, where he is responsible for educational programs, since 1996. He has also served as Executive Secretary of the Androscoggin Historical Society in Auburn, as well as Curator of Collections at the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Museum in New Gloucester from 1984 to 1991. David majored in History at Bates College in Lewiston. He holds a master's degree in New England Studies from the University of Southern Maine and a doctorate in History from the University of New Hampshire. His first book, Poland Spring: A Tale of the Gilded Age, 1860-1900 (http://www.upne.com/1-58465-481-3.html), analyzes the history of the famous Maine resort and water source. His recently published second book, One Northwood: The First Fifty Years, is a history of the university that owns and operates the Margaret Chase Smith Library. In his spare time, David has led over 250 Maine Humanities Council book discussions throughout the state since 1996. He has been involved with SAD 54 Adult Education through the Let's Talk About It adult literacy program since 1998.
